Formed by composer/violinist, Meg Okura, Sakamoto Tribute Ensemble interprets his enduring compositions with the utmost reverence, from the revolutionary Thousand Knives to the iconic sounds of the Yellow Magic Orchestra and the Oscar-winning film scores. Consisting of the top New York jazz musicians, the ensemble is unique yet, a seamless blend of electronica, modern jazz, classical and improvised music.
The Sakamoto Tribute Ensemble made its stellar sold-out debut at the 20th Winter Jazzfest in New York City, co-presented by Roulette Intermedium on what would have been Mr. Sakamoto's 72nd birthday, on January 17, 2024.
Meg Okura, a Grammy-nominated violinist and composer, is a Juilliard graduate who has graced global stages with luminaries like Michael Brecker, Steve Swallow, Lee Konitz, Tom Harrell, and others. With a discography of nine albums, she is the recent winner of several international composition competitions: the IAWM Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble Prize, the LunART Festival, the TUTTI Festival, the Festival of New Music, and the 2023 ISJAC Commission, which will be premiered this May in Nashville, TN. In 2024, Okura is set to release two albums: the fifth album of her Pan Asian Chamber Jazz Ensemble and a duo album with Kevin Hays, touring the U.S. as a Jazz Road grant recipient. The premiere of Okura’s "Phantasmagoria," will take place in Ohio, Wisconsin, and Florida.
